Swedish (U)HNWIs Considering Departures Ahead of “Exit Tax”
Bloomberg[1] reports that (U)HNWIs in Sweden may be pre-empting proposals for an “exit tax” proposed by politicians ahead of a general election next month by departing and switching tax residency[2].
“Exit taxes” (which are a form of penal tax imposed on unrealised capital gains for a departing tax resident) are already commonplace in certain parts of Continental Europe[3], designed to stem the outflow of (U)HNWIs whose wealth primarily consists of capital assets (versus income for high earners).
The United Kingdom previously floated such a policy proposal[4] (cancelled at last-minute due to heavy advocacy by venture capitalist Harry Stebbings[5] and the technology startup industry[6]) last year and is expected to re-introduce this idea as part of the new British administration[7].
